EightBitBeats - a social 8 Bit music sequencer
Created as part of the 48-hour Node Knockout programming competition, where teams of programmers were to create a web-based app in a weekend using node.js
The idea is interesting, yet not polished - with a little more work this could be a fun collaborative site, but the basics are there. You have a sequencer board, with six types of instruments. A Mega-Man sprite runs from left to right as the timer. Other participants can join in, setting up their own sequences, composing together. You can chat and interact. You can’t, though, save your compositions, and each online user can only operate one type of instrument at a time, and if you change your instrument, you lose whatever you have been working on.
The video above best demonstrates the idea, using the Streetfighter II track ‘Ken’s Theme’ as an example.
For more info about the development from a coder perspective, this post gives all the details you need.

TC reports that the company is hoping to release the app next week. It has been in testing with a few dozen people for the past few weeks, and is solid on WiFi connections, but less so over 3G.

Music/Mashup: Today In WTF: WUGAZI (Wu-Tang Meets Fugazi) Free Mixtape
Midwestern producers Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy appropriately created this mixtape under the name Wugazi. Both Otter and Andy do an excellent job of paying tribute to these two legendary acts on their 13 Chambers mixtape. The record opens up with legendary tracks like Wu Tang’s “C.R.E.A.M.” and mashes it up with Fugazi’s sleepy piano ballad “I’m So Tired.” This first track alone shows the range of sound that the duo was aiming for, but the sleepy start is deceiving compared to the energy the rest of the mixtape brings.

Music/Technology: A passive music selection system that plays music based solely on your face
Automatic DJ creates party/venue playlists tailored directly to people who walk through the door. A camera at the door uses facial recognition to identify each person’s Facebook profile. Combining data from Facebook likes and users’ linked Hunch data, Automatic DJ is able to capture specific tracks from the Echo Nest’s expansive database of musical data tied to songs. These recommendations then fuel a dynamic Spotify playlist that can be streamed during the event
Music/Technology: Google Engineer Turns Subway Lines Into Musical Instruments
Manhattan denizens sometimes describe the sounds of the subway as the city’s incidental music. Now programmer/designer Alexander Chen has created a more soothing version with MTA.me, an interactive NYC subway map-turned-musical-instrument that uses transit lines as its strings.
Music/Technology: DJ Numarks Musical Toys
DJ Nu-Mark is often overshadowed by his Jurassic 5 counterpart Cut Chemist, but I’ve always thought dude was super underrated and have always been interested in hearing and seeing what he’s been up to. The above video shows just how seriously he takes his music, utilizing the relatively untapped world of children’s toys to help create his soundscapes. Really cool video that’s sure to spawn a herd of copycats.
